Jeffersonville, Ind. – Residents and visitors to downtown Jeffersonville will soon be able to enjoy alcoholic beverages in designated outdoor spaces. This comes after the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission (ATC) approved the City’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) application.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for downtown Jeff,” Mayor Mike Moore said. “We believe the DORA designation will promote community engagement, boost economic activity, and provide folks with a vibrant and dynamic outdoor social space.”
The Jeffersonville City Council approved the DORA ordinance pursuant to I.C. 7.1-3-31.
Downtown retailers within a certain location will have the opportunity to apply for a permit. Under state law, the city may establish up to seven DORAs.
All residential property is excluded. At each of the street entries/exits from the DORA, the sidewalk will be painted with a logo making it clear someone is entering or exiting the refreshment area.
All participating retailers will have a sign posted within their establishment that indicates they are a DORA location and use designated DORA cups. These cups are for use only in the refreshment area.
Numerous downtown restaurants and retailers have expressed interest in becoming a DORA in Jeffersonville.
“We’re excited,” Moore said. “Especially as the temperatures increase, I can see downtown businesses working together to promote the area and coordinating events. Other cities have seen a substantial increase in foot traffic and customer spending after allowing similar permits.”
A DORA boundary may not be located within 200 feet of a church or school, unless there is at least eighty-five (85) feet and a two (2) lane road of at least thirty (30) feet in width between the boundary and the church or school.
To be considered, you must first apply with the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission. Here’s the link to the application for the retail permittee in DORA: 57288 fill-in and ATC: Alcohol Permit Applications & Forms (in.gov).
