IU Southeast Announces New Scholarship for Gap Year Students

New Albany, Ind. (May 24, 2024) – Indiana University Southeast recently announced the creation of a new scholarship for gap-year students, a first for colleges and universities in the southern Indiana, north-central Kentucky region. Traditionally, students who take a gap year between high school and college may miss out on scholarship opportunities.

The IU Southeast Gap Year Scholarship is a $4,000 scholarship, $1,000 per year, renewable for four years.

“A growing number of high school students are taking a year off between high school and college, a time normally referred to as a gap year,” said Lisa Hoffman, interim associate vice chancellor for enrollment services at IU Southeast. “Indiana University Southeast recognizes the value of a gap year for some students and wants to provide opportunities for students who have taken time off for service, work, travel, or other activities after high school. This new scholarship is a way to welcome students to IU Southeast after their gap year.”

The IU Southeast Gap Year Scholarship can be awarded to first-time students who graduated from high school up to two years before enrolling at IU Southeast. Students must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.00, must maintain satisfactory academic progress and a minimum GPA once enrolled, and may pursue any major offered at IU Southeast.

“IU Southeast already offers the best value in the region, combining the prestige of an Indiana University degree with the most affordable tuition among four-year colleges and universities,” said Hoffman. “Now we are also becoming the first university in our region to launch a scholarship tailored to students who take a gap year or two between high school and college.”

For more information about the Gap Year Scholarship, or other IU Southeast scholarships, contact the Student Central office at sesc@ius.edu or visit the scholarship search website at https://southeast.iu.edu/scholarships.

Louisville Zoo’s Popular Red Panda Gets New Digs for His Birthday

Sunny D’s new space offers enhanced explorations, relaxation and future housing for multiple red pandas

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 23, 2024) – Today, the Louisville Zoo announced that one of their most beloved animals — Sundara (Sunny D), the red panda — is now back on exhibit in a totally new space, just in time for his May 23rd birthday.

Sunny D’s new location makes him exhibit neighbors with the Zoo’s trio of Linnaeus’s two-toed sloths — Fern, Sunni and Sebastian— and provides more room for the 2-year-old panda to explore and relax. His new surroundings boast two large outdoor areas as well as offering the potential to house multiple red pandas in the future.

Dan Maloney, director of the Louisville Zoo emphasized the habitat’s role in supporting the broader conservation efforts of the Red Panda Species Survival Plan.

“With this new habitat, the Louisville Zoo continues its commitment to the care and conservation of endangered species like the red panda by not only providing a nurturing environment for Sunny D, but also the opportunity for potential offspring.”

Red pandas love to climb, and Sunny D’s new abode is outfitted with a network of climbing elements that span the length of the habitat. This structure is specially designed from sizeable pieces of an Osage orange tree that succumbed to a storm at Joe Creason Park and was donated to the Zoo by Metro Parks. Additional hollow trees offer cozy spots for Sunny D’s other favorite pastime, napping.

Lush bamboo plants enrich his new home, offering diverse feeding opportunities. The dwelling is also equipped with large fans and shaded areas to help Sunny D stay cool, along with a comfortable indoor bedroom.

In addition to providing a superior living space for Sunny D, the Zoo plans to introduce an immersive behind-the-scenes experience with red pandas. This will include naturalistic log training stations for VIP encounters and daily keeper chats for guests. The behind-the-scenes area is fully ADA-compliant, ensuring accessibility for all visitors.

Mayor Moore Supports Pay Raise, New Work Schedule for Police

On May 16, 2024, Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore announced his strong support for raising the base salary for newly hired police officers by more than $6,000 along with a new five days-on and four day-off rotating work schedule.

Under a proposed amendment to the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #100, the patrolman salary would increase from $59,714.92 to $66,000 starting July 1st.

“This raise will go a long way in bringing the pay for our police officers in line with other departments in the area,” said Moore who is requesting the City Council approve the amendment at Monday’s meeting. “It will send a message that Jeffersonville is committed to compensating our officers for their work and sacrifice.”

The amendment also would implement an 8 ½ hour work day with five days-on and four days-off.

“This creative work schedule would be the first in the region and one of the few in the nation,” said Moore. “It allows our officers to have more flexibility in their work schedule in a very stressful job so they can spend more time with their families.”

Moore also supports a proposed increase in longevity pay for officers from 1.5% of a first-class patrolman’s pay for each year of service to a maximum of 25 years. Presently longevity pay is 1.2% for each year of service up to 20 years.

“I commend Chief Kavanaugh and the City Council for being proactive in our on-going efforts in enticing and retaining the best men and women to keep us safe. Our city is experiencing incredible growth, as Mayor I support any efforts that will make sure our residents are well protected,” said Moore.

The City Council is scheduled to consider the changes to the collective bargaining agreement at its meeting Monday at 6 p.m. on the first floor of City Hall located at 500 Quartermaster Ct. in Jeffersonville.

Jeffersonville launches Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA)

Jeffersonville, Ind. – Residents and visitors to downtown Jeffersonville will soon be able to enjoy alcoholic beverages in designated outdoor spaces. This comes after the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission (ATC) approved the City’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) application.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for downtown Jeff,” Mayor Mike Moore said. “We believe the DORA designation will promote community engagement, boost economic activity, and provide folks with a vibrant and dynamic outdoor social space.”

The Jeffersonville City Council approved the DORA ordinance pursuant to I.C. 7.1-3-31.

Downtown retailers within a certain location will have the opportunity to apply for a permit. Under state law, the city may establish up to seven DORAs.

All residential property is excluded. At each of the street entries/exits from the DORA, the sidewalk will be painted with a logo making it clear someone is entering or exiting the refreshment area.

All participating retailers will have a sign posted within their establishment that indicates they are a DORA location and use designated DORA cups. These cups are for use only in the refreshment area.

Numerous downtown restaurants and retailers have expressed interest in becoming a DORA in Jeffersonville.

“We’re excited,” Moore said. “Especially as the temperatures increase, I can see downtown businesses working together to promote the area and coordinating events. Other cities have seen a substantial increase in foot traffic and customer spending after allowing similar permits.”

A DORA boundary may not be located within 200 feet of a church or school, unless there is at least eighty-five (85) feet and a two (2) lane road of at least thirty (30) feet in width between the boundary and the church or school.

To be considered, you must first apply with the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission. Here’s the link to the application for the retail permittee in DORA: 57288 fill-in and ATC: Alcohol Permit Applications & Forms (in.gov).
