In order to reduce poverty and improve well-being  in our community,  Community Action of Southern Indiana works to focus available local, state, federal, and private resources to help  low-income individuals and families acquire useful skills and knowledge, to gain access to needed services, to discover new opportunities, and to achieve economic self-sufficiency.

Community Action of Southern Indiana’s broad base of services makes a difference every day for individuals and families. 

Community Action of Southern Indiana carries out its mission through the provision of a broad range of direct services and through partnerships with other community-based organizations

CASI’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs serve over 300 children, ages  birth to 5.

CASI’s Weatherization Assistance Program permanently lowers utility bills by providing energy saving home improvements.

Community Action of Southern Indiana’s Housing Choice Voucher Program is committed to the idea that every family has the right to safe, decent, and affordable housing. 

The Minority Health Initiative works to eliminate health disparities through research, training, education, advocacy, and by improving access to health care services for at-risk populations.

The Southern Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Coalition brings community partners together to reduce tobacco use within at-risk communities in Clark County.

VOICE Action Speaks engages youth leaders and advocates in the movement against teen tobacco use.

The Expungement Program, in partnership with the Gilt Edge Community Development Corporation, gives individuals convicted of certain crimes a fresh start through the expungement of their Indiana convictions.

The Life Literacy Academy mentors a select group of students from 8th grade through 12th grade. 

Empower Southern Indiana helps to provide financial empowerment to low-income individuals.

Community Gardens provides healthy food through sustainable gardening. 

The Teen Boutique program allows low-income students to purchase $100 of new clothes for school.

Dare to Care Food Bank leads our community to feed the hungry and conquer the cycle of need. We fulfill this mission through innovative programs, efficient operations and by partnering with local food pantries, shelters and kitchens to get food to people in need.

Impact in community:

In Southern Indiana, more than 31,000 adults and 9,000 children face food insecurity. Dare to Care Food Bank works to fill that need by providing annually 4.3 million pounds of food to Southern Indiana at 83 food access points including pantries, soup kitchens, school pantries, prescriptive pantries and Kid’s Cafes. Our partners include the Center for Lay Ministries, Sellersburg Community Food Pantry, Washington County Food Bank, St. Vincent De Paul Clarksville, the Floyd County Library, and many more.

Brandon’s House is the only counseling center specifically for teens that provides completely free counseling.  We have removed the financial barrier, by providing free counseling, that often keeps young people from getting the mental health help they so desperately need.  We have served, through counseling, thousands of teens & their families throughout our 30 years and never once have we charged the client for the counseling we’ve provided.  The impact we’ve had is hard to measure, however we have been a place of hope & healing at a pivotal point in an individual’s developmental stage in life. 

Agency Mission Statement or Description:

Our mission is simply to be a safe place for teens to be heard, find hope and to get equipped for today’s many challenges.  We do that by providing completely free counseling to any teen & their family in our community. 

Year established: 1993 (30th anniversary this October)

Focus areas: Mental Health for Teens & their families

Impact in community: We have served, through counseling, thousands of teens & families in Southern Indiana throughout the last 30 years. 

Volunteer Opportunities: Mostly with fund & friend-raising

How 1si members can help your organization: By spreading the word of the free counseling we provide to teens.  Or by covering the cost of a teen’s counseling with us.  The average teen comes for 12 visits over a 3.5 month period.  Each visit costs $125 per session (an hour long).  So the total cost of a typical teen’s counseling is $1,500.  Maybe a group of people come together to cover the cost of a teen’s counseling. 

Additional information: In 2021 we served 147 teens & families.  In 2022 we served 233 teens & families.  This year we are on pace to serve over 300 teens & families.  Essentially we’ve more than doubled our impact in just the last 2 years.

Our mission: We protect and heal children and families.  Our vision is happy, healthy children and families…freed from abuse.  Family & Children’s Place guides families through life’s challenges school-based, mental health counseling, and child advocacy services. We provide resources that build skills for children, families, and communities to use now and for generations to come.  

Year established: 1883.  We are 140 years old this September!

  • Child Advocacy Centers: Comprehensive, child-friendly, treatment and evaluation centers for abused children providing families with compassionate, coordinated intervention and investigation of child abuse.
  • Counseling Services: individual, family, group, and school-based services using evidence-based, proven interventions for children and families who have experienced trauma.
  • School-Based Services (SBS): family-centered out-of-school-time programs designed to improve academic success and strengthen families, build character and social competency, and bolster relationships between the student, family, and school.

Impact on community:
We are the region’s leading organization serving children and families impacted by abuse, neglect, and community violence. We provide services in a 17-county region encompassing Southern Indiana and Louisville, KY. When the unthinkable occurs, Family and Children’s Place provides a refuge that allows children to heal in a supportive environment and our team is with families every step of the way.  We also promote initiatives to bring child abuse prevention to the broader cultural conversation to create healthier communities. Our School-based services promote regular engagement and participation, improved social and life skills and improved academic performance.

Waterfront Botanical Gardens is an urban botanical garden located minutes away from downtown Louisville and southern Indiana. Built upon a former landfill, the Gardens are a living museum that allows visitors to explore native and unique plant species while creating a deeper connection with nature. From Master Gardener to planting novice, the Gardens are here for all to enjoy. Admission is FREE, but as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Gardens rely on community support to grow. Of the complete 23-acre site, three acres have been developed. The Gardens offer adult and youth programming, special community events, event rental space, group tours, and more. Soon, Waterfront Botanical Gardens will simply be a part of growing up in Kentucky and southern Indiana!

Agency Mission Statement or Description: Our mission is to cultivate urban botanical gardens that educate, inspire, and enhance appreciation of the relationship between plant life and a healthy environment.

Year established: Waterfront Botanical Gardens opened to the public in 2019.

Focus areas: Environment, Sustainability, Adult and Youth Education

Impact on community: Waterfront Botanical Gardens is a unique cultural institution that provides imaginative and engaging programming, events, and experiences as well as education and research. In 2022, we welcomed 40,000 visitors to the Gardens and provided education to nearly 3,000 youth and 1,600 adults.

Pathway of Home is helping with Homeownership. We currently have 7 pre-approvals for the purchase of a home and 2 families that have closed on their new home. I am currently working with 36 families.

Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) serves Floyd, Clark, Scott, Washington & Jefferson County

Focus areas: Basic Needs-Human Services

Impact on community: We partner with 57 churches, MUW, Dare To Care and collaborate with similar nonprofits caring for our low-income population needing assistance. In 2022, we provided 17,565 services to the community. We distributed more than $955,000 in food through the pantry. We served 2092 unduplicated households with 88% of services in Floyd County. We helped 701 families with basic utility bills to avoid disconnection, assisted 628 families with rent/mortgage payments to avoid eviction, and with our IDVA grant, we were able to provide $41,000 in services to Veterans.  In 2022, we served 783 households for the first time ever; families that had not had to visit a food pantry or social service organization before.

Volunteer Opportunities: We offer many opportunities for volunteers at Hope Southern Indiana.  Through our RSVP program, we offer volunteer opportunities at 130 other organizations in 5 counties.

Impact in community: There is no other place in the world like the Falls of the Ohio, where so many natural, cultural, and historical resources come together to create a truly unique landscape with stories to tell. The Falls of the Ohio Foundation works to steward these resources and share these stories, helping connect our community to the past while protecting what we have for future generations. The Foundation does this in several different ways including providing free educational experiences at the Falls of the Ohio State Park which brought over 1,700 students and youth to the Falls last year at no cost to them. Additionally, the Foundation provides grants to help improve the visitor experience at the State Park and creates unique community activations to encourage exploration and preservation of this beautiful landscape.

  • Since 1978, Hosparus Health has provided compassionate hospice and palliative care to seriously ill patients and their families.
  • We are one of the largest not-for-profit, community-based hospice and palliative care providers in the United States.
  • Each year, we care for more than 10,000 patients throughout our 35-county service area in Kentucky and Indiana. Those counties are:
    • Louisville region: Jefferson, Oldham, Trimble, Henry, Shelby and Spencer
    • Southern Indiana: Orange, Crawford, Washington, Scott, Jefferson, Clark, Floyd, and Harrison
    • Central Kentucky: Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, LaRue and Meade counties
    • Green River: Adair, Green, Marion, Taylor and Washington

Our Services

  • Hospice Care: We believe everyone deserves to have a peaceful ending. Considered the gold standard in compassionate care, we provide comprehensive end-of-life care to people facing serious illnesses or injuries who are expected to live six months or less.
  • Palliative Care: Patients with serious or chronic illness can access our high-quality palliative care at any time through Pallitus Health Partners, a program of Hosparus Health. We can help patients manage the symptoms associated with their condition for as long as necessary, allowing them to live more comfortably. Some of our palliative patients have been in our care for several years.
  • Kourageous Kids: We know nothing is more important than the health and well-being of a child. We not only care for adults at any age, but we also help children and their families face the challenges of serious illness through our Kourageous Kids program.
    • Founded in 1980, Kourageous Kids is one of the oldest programs of its kind in the country and is one of the only pediatric palliative and hospice program in Kentucky.
    • Each year, we care for over 100 children in our Kourageous Kids program. Our most seriously ill children are eligible for hospice care when the need arises, regardless of their ability to pay.
  • Veteran Care: We are proud to be a 4-star partner of the national We Honor Veterans program, which ensures our nation’s servicemen and women get the compassionate care and recognition they deserve.
  • Grief Services: Our care does not end when your loved one dies. GCC provides grief support and services to the families of our patients for up to 13 months after death. Many of our grief support programs are also open to anyone in the community who has lost a loved one.
    • Last year, our team provided over 17,000 hours of grief support through in-person, telehealth, individual, and group counseling sessions.

 

Care Teams

  • You are in the most compassionate, capable hands with our care teams. Our expert care teams are made up of board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners, nurses, certified nursing assistants, social workers and counselors, chaplains and volunteers. They provide:
    • Symptom management, such as pain, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath and restlessness
    • Care coordination with other health providers
    • Medication management
    • Personal care such as bathing and light housekeeping
    • Counseling and resources on advance directives and other end-of-life decisions
    • Spiritual care
    • Respite for the family and companionship for the patient
    • Grief services for patients, families and other loved ones
    • 24/7 phone support

Volunteers

  • Our organization was founded by a small group of passionate volunteers 45 years ago who believed that everyone deserves to die with dignity.
  • We have over 500 volunteers who support our patients and families, doing everything from providing companionship to patients to helping at fundraising events.
  • In 2022, our volunteers contributed over 73,000 hours supporting our mission.
