Luncheon Keynote Speaker
John W. Waggoner
HMS Global Maritime
President & Chief Executive Officer
John Waggoner has been actively involved in the passenger vessel industry for over 40 years. He began his career in the sport fishing industry, but has been involved in many and varied segments of the industry including Commercial Fishing, Offshore Oil Support Vessels, Dinner Cruise and Excursion Vessels, Casino Boats and Car and Passenger Ferry Operations and Overnight Cruise vessels.
He received a Master of Business Administration in June of 1989 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology in June of 1979 from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. He was nominated Outstanding MBA of the Year and selected by his peers as the MBA with the highest stress tolerance, which as we all know, is appropriate for this industry.
After serving as Director of Marine Operations for Hornblower Dining Yacht’s fleet of 29 Dinner Cruise vessels, John and his partner founded Hornblower Marine Services in 1994, which was later renamed HMS Global Maritime. One of the greatest accomplishments of John’s career has been founding HMS and watching the company grow from one employee to a staff of over 860, and gross revenues of over $150,000,000 annually.
HMS Global Maritime has received numerous awards and recognition including earning a spot on Louisville Business First’s Fast 50 and Inc. 5000 five of the past six years, as well as being named a finalist for Louisville Business First’s Business of the Year Awards, 2012-2016. In addition, John was named a finalist in the prestigious 2016 EY Entrepreneur of the Year Awards for the Ohio Valley region. In 2018 he was awarded by One Southern Indiana for the Business of the Year 51 or More Employees ONE Award.
While serving as President and CEO is a challenging task, John still lives his childhood dream of “being able to play with boats the rest of his life so he will never have to grow up and get a real job.”
