Ask any company that relies on skilled workers, and you’ll hear all about the trouble they have finding qualified workers.  Baby boomers are retiring in large numbers, even as the number of positions available in sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, construction and the service industry has increased exponentially.  And when those older workers leave, they are taking years of accumulated skill, expertise and experience with them.

Even when employers can attract good people, they find that additional and ongoing training is a must.  Employers need trained people to keep productivity high — and employees overwhelmingly say that training is a big factor in deciding where to work and whether to stay.

When it comes to training, budget is always a consideration, and U.S. companies, especially smaller ones, tend to underspend on training, which can cause turn-over, growth stagnation and quality issues – all of which are expensive in the long run.  Complicating this issue is the fact that each company needs a unique mix of training to keep its workforce running smoothly.  There’s no single source for all of that education.

And the need for training goes beyond the hard skills specific to a particular position, company or industry.  A study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) found the following to be employers’ most valued soft skills for employees:

  2. Ability to make decisions and solve problems
  3. Ability to communicate verbally with people inside and outside an organization
  4. Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work
  5. Ability to obtain and process information
