Networking Experts Share Top 10 Things NOT TO SAY When Making Connections

Kyle Morey, One Southern Indiana & Shawna Burton, GLI are ready to go in the A.M.

5.8.08 - Minutes before an audience of 120 businesses prepare to deliver 30 second info commercials to one another, Kate Caufield, VP of Business Development for Audiacom and 1SI Champion Connector conducts a Top 10 countdown of what not to say at a networking event.  Patterned after the famous Dave Letterman Top 10, members of 1SI’s Champion Connectors – a volunteer group of highly trained networking experts – each stand among the audience and deliver amusing but true one-line networking faux pas.

Following are the top 10 things you should not say at a networking event:

  1. Uh….and um….
  2. Hi, My Name is ____, I’m with ____, and we’re located at _____
  3. My brochures and business cards are on the table if you want to pick one up…
  4. I don’t have any business cards…
  5.  I’m not any good at this, so I apologize if I sound nervous…
  6. (look down at your feet and whisper so no one can hear you as you introduce yourself)
  7. Our business has had a rough year, but we are really bouncing back…
  8. Do you know anyone who’s hiring…?
  9. I’ve been married for 15 years, I have 3 kids, two dogs and a cat….
  10. What are you doing Friday night?

“Yet another great reason to get involved with 1SI’s Network of Champions!” says Lin Schussler-Williams, VP of Warren Technologies and Chairperson of the Champion Connectors.  “Not only can you prospect at the event, but you get hands-on training delivering 30 second and 2 minute presentations as well as networking tips from industry experts.”

Since its inauguration in January 2008, the Network of Champions has connected over 500 business professionals through its unique 3-program structure.  Over 200 thirty-second commercials were given, 240 two-minute presentations were delivered, and unlimited connections and handshakes were made.  The Network of Champions is a staple, monthly program provided by One Southern Indiana and funded this year by L&D Mail Masters with silver sponsors Regions Bank/Morgan Keegan and Payment Alliance
